A Book for Ukraine

We’re raising money for those affected by the war

Meet Captain Fluffbeard and Happy Worm

When the bravest space cat pirate in the universe meets a magic worm, adventure follows. Especially after they’re forced to make an emergency landing on planet earth.

Last year, we raised more than £2,000 with our comic. This year, we’re back. And we’ve got a beautifully illustrated children’s book we can’t wait to share with you.

Every penny goes to Ukraine’s refugees

We’re a father and son who love to write stories and draw comics together. And this is our bit.

If you enjoy our book (and the comic we published in 2022), please support us. All money goes directly to the United Nations Refugee Agency (UNHCR).

You can get a signed, physical copy of the book for a donation of £10 or more (fingers crossed for £20). Or a digital copy with any donation you make.

Enjoy!

Got a question?

Q: How do I donate?

A: Just hit a “donate” button.

Q: How much do I give?

A: Your call. Every Pound goes directly to the United Nations Refugee Agency (UNHCR).

Q: I’d love to tell you what I thought of the book or comic. Can I do that?

A: We’d love to hear from you. There’s a contact form on the homepage of this website.

Q: What’s the backstory here?

A: I’ve been drawing comics since I was my son’s age. As a journalist, I’ve reported on wars and natural disasters. It all just came together. My son and I love writing stories and drawing together. The characters were all born on our many adventures.

Updates:

13 July 2023:

You’ve helped us raise £2,500. A kind friend 3D printed some merch for us. And we’ve just done our first big push to get the new book out. It’s been a busy few days.
We ran a stand at our local fair this past weekend. It rained for half the day. But the sun came out and we landed up having a wonderful time. It was great to see so many kids who remembered Captain Fluffbeard and Happy Worm from last year’s comic.
If you managed to pick up a copy of The Match, we hope you’re enjoying it. Let us know what you think (there’s a contact form on the homepage of this website). We printed 100 books, and signed all of them. So don’t miss your chance to get one of these limited edition copies. We’ve still got a few keyrings left too.
Thanks for all your support. It’s good to be back.

13 June 2023:

The Magic Match.

The story’s written. The illustrations are done. And the printers are running. We’re waiting for the first print run of our new Captain Fluffbeard and Happy Worm children’s book. We can’t wait to share it with you (more on that soon). For now, here’s the back cover blurb to give you a taste of the adventures that await…

“A torn thread, a fiery volcano, time travel and a new friend named Needle. Not to mention the army of zombie-like fleas and a match that unlocks space portals. Join Captain Fluffbeard and Happy Worm on their adventure. Plus, every penny we make from this book goes straight to the United Nations Refugee Agency. Created by a dad and his 10-year-old son.”

It’s taken us about half a year to pull this together. We’ve met some wonderful people along the way (especially Riley, the illustrator). And, with a bit of luck, we might even have some merch for you.

More on this, and everything else, soon.

5 July 2022:

From the shelf of a comic book store to our own colourful stand at a community fair. We’ve now raised more than £2,000 for the UN Refugee Agency. All the copies of our comic are gone. And we’re scratching away at a few ideas for Captain Fluffbeard and Happy Worm’s next adventure.

The fair was fantastic. We met so many people, including Ukrainian refugees who are living in our area. We built the displays. Painted the signs. Printed pamphlets. And soaked up the sun and live music as we told people our story.

Then, in the evening, something unexpected happened. A donation came in. Maybe it was someone we met that day. Maybe not. We have no way of knowing since it was made anonymously. We had watched the numbers tick over… £2… £5… £10… £20… This anonymous donation was for £200.

Kindness, in its purest form, is beautiful. And we’re still feeling inspired. Thank you, kind stranger.

9 April 2022:

We’re sharing a shelf with Spider-Man and Moon Knight. Our local comic store agreed to stock some copies, which are helping us raise money for the UN Refugee Agency.

29 March 2022:

The first 100 copies of our comic have arrived. Each one is ready to raise more money for refugees fleeing the war. We’ll be selling them soon, but feel free to drop us a line and order a copy. (Who knows, one day they might be a collector’s item.)

A huge thank you to our wonderful friends at The Writer. You’ve helped us hit a big milestone: £1,500. And you’ve been spreading the word.

As for printing the comic… we couldn’t have done it without you, Inky Little Fingers. You gave us a generous discount. And 5-star service. Not to mention how great the prints came out. Thank you.

22 March 2022:

Let there be colour! We’ve updated our comic… and it feels like a whole new adventure. Check it out.

Also, a few days ago, we received a message from a perfect stranger in Canada. It made us think about how far even the smallest ripples can flow. Here it is:

“The comic was a great idea! Please pass along my thanks to your son. I’ll be reading it to my own child today and using it to start a discussion about raising funds for refugees. After reading the comic I donated to the Canadian branch of the UNHCR, but it was the comic that got me to do it. Thanks!”

And finally, we’ve gone to the printers for our first print run. More on that soon.

17 March 2022:

We did it. We’ve raised more than £1,000 for refugees fleeing Ukraine.

A huge thank you to Babelquest, the first company to support our comic, and its MD Becky Murphy. You’ve helped us reach a big milestone. You’ve also given us a shiny new lens on what’s possible. So we’ll keep at it.

A very talented artist is now colouring in the comic. So in a few days we’ll have a new version. We can’t wait. And once that’s done, we’re going to order our first print run. More on all that soon.

12 March 2022:

Thanks to all our friends, old and new. We’re seeing so much love and support from around the globe. We’re grateful for every donation we’ve been able to pass along to the UN Refugee Agency.

A big shout out to 4G. You know who you are. This project would be nowhere without you.

Thanks to the folks at FlippingBook. You’ve given our comic a free online home for the next three months. You’re awesome.

Thanks to our youngest supporter. When you’re 9, pocket money’s precious. Thanks for parting with a bit of it for an important cause.

And you know Neil Gaiman… the author… (The Sandman comics, Stardust, American Gods, Coraline, etc)… the guy on Masterclass… well, he gave our appeal a boost by retweeting it to his 2.8 million followers.
